Many individuals who follow the Nutritarian diet write to Dr. Fuhrman about their success. Keep in mind that results vary from person to person. As always, consult your physician if you have a medical history and/or condition that may warrant individual recommendations.
Jack lost 40 pounds and lowered his high cholesterol and triglyceride levels
I was fighting a losing battle against high cholesterol and elevated triglyceride levels. Years of trouble with the side effects of statin medications, including debilitating muscle pain, convinced me to seek another solution.
Right on cue, I saw an article by a co-worker describing the success he enjoyed after adopting the Nutritarian teachings of Joel Fuhrman, M.D. Two years prior I saw Dr. Fuhrman’s PBS special, 3 Steps to Incredible Health, but did not pay much attention to it. This time I paid attention. I bought Dr. Fuhrman’s book, Eat To Live, and learned the science of proper nutrition. I accepted the doctor’s challenge. Give me six weeks, he promised, and I will show you how you can learn to enjoy the health and goodness of real greens, delicious fruits, beans, onions, mushrooms seeds and nuts. While gradually adding in small amounts of meat and fish, per Dr. Fuhrman’s advice, I learned to enjoy foods that were healing me, instead of the refined grains, sugars, and animal fats that were harming me.
When I began in May I weighed 215 pounds. In August I dropped down to 175 pounds, a loss of 40 pounds, in just over three months. I’ve gone from a size 38 waistline back to my old size 34. I cut out a lifelong habit of snacking between meals. I don’t starve myself. Instead, I am satisfied with foods that are good for me. I no longer get dizzy or headaches from lack of sugar. My digestion has improved. For the first time in years, I sleep through the night. Moderate exercise is a joy instead of a struggle. I have energy I have not had in ages. All of this, without drugs, gimmicks or fad diets.
A visit to my internist in August 2014 was a joyful experience. My total cholesterol dropped over 100 mgs from 3 years ago. My LDL dropped over 80 mg. My triglycerides plummeted from 269 mg. in 2011 to 92 mg last week. And the best words of all were the doctor’s notes:“Normal. Outstanding reduction in your cholesterol.”
I now eat all the healthy food I want, and watch the weight fall off. I am on a plan that changed my appearance, and that I can stick with forever.
