Gerald lost 161 pounds after 57 years of fighting obesity
In September 2012 I saw an endocrinologist about my 57 year long struggle with obesity. His diagnosis was a leptin deficiency and a subclinical hypothalamus. I was so happy. I finally found the answer to my obesity until he said there is nothing I can do for your situation. Then he prescribed a compounded pill that he had a local pharmacy make. It had an amphetamine for appetite control, Xanax to counteract the amphetamine, a diuretic for water loss, some kind of thyroid medication and something else I can't remember. He said this would help me lose weight. I filled the prescription, and, within a few days, experienced several side effects, including rapid irregular heartbeats, constipation and others. I called the doctor to tell him about the side effects. He said I can give you another pill. I said no.
During this time I researched the conditions he diagnosed. There were limited opportunities for a quick pill fix. As I continued to research I saw a lot of information on leptin resistance that said giving up processed foods was key. Also, during this time, I saw one of Dr. Fuhrman's PBS specials in which he talked about not eating processed foods. I thought it doesn't matter if I am leptin resistant or deficient; the net result is that my brain is not getting the signal to stop eating. I immediately adopted G-BOMBS as my new eating plan; not new diet but new way of eating for life.
I could not have hoped for better results! I weighed 334 pounds at the original doctor visit and one year later I weighed 173 pounds. That is 161 pounds lost in a year. I was able to stop taking the acid reflux medication I had been taking for years. My blood pressure at the first visit was 140/90 and now it is now consistently in the 110/ 60 range. My total cholesterol then was 214; now at my latest physical it was 139; my HDL was 69 and LDL was 66. Previously, I was taking 1000 mg of Ibuprofen a day; and now I haven't taken any in over a year. But to me, as amazing as the physical transformation, the change in my mental awareness is even more so. I never realized I was in such a mental fog. The clarity and awareness I experience now is difficult for me to put into words because it is so amazing.
It is now a year and seven months since my original weight loss and my weight is maintaining between 175 and 180 pounds. Over the months my appetite decreased and I do not eat as much as when I started the program, but I eat until I am full. My taste buds also exploded during this time. Foods that I would never have considered before, or just did not like, I now find myself craving. I can go on and on about my experience, but I think you understand what I am saying. Adopting Dr. Fuhrman's G-BOMBS strategy has saved my life and I am forever grateful.
I tell as many people as will listen about my experience, and try to be as bright a shining light as I can be about this way of eating. My hope is my story will inspire and motivate others.
