Karl says losing 130 pounds saved his life; with it went his diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol
I weighed 303 pounds and felt horrible. I was taking insulin, metformin, Januvia, Lipitor, and Diovan for my diabetes. One morning I was walking to the bathroom from my bedroom and couldn't breathe. I ended up hospitalized with deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism and knew I had to do something. Before being diagnosed with diabetes, I used to walk five to seven miles a day. Each medication the doctor added to my list decreased my energy levels, and I walked less and less. My triglycerides levels were in the 200-300 plus range, my total cholesterol was 300. My HA1C levels were running around 8 to 9.
I started the Eat To Live diet, joined the Y and swam since I couldn't walk much. I lost 130 pounds. On my last doctor's visit, the doctor called the lab that did my blood work to confirm that they hadn't mixed me up with someone else. My HA1C was 5.3 minus. I am now off all prescription medications, walking five to six miles again (some of it up steep mountain side paths) and can breathe freely again. My total cholesterol was 91. My blood pressure is running 110/65.
This diet works! No question about it. I never ever feel hungry. I stuff my face with a whole head of lettuce (without anything on it) when I feel the urge to eat too much. Slowly I am getting rid of that bad habit of eating to "feel better." Dr. Fuhrman, your book saved my life.
