Many individuals who follow the Nutritarian diet write to Dr. Fuhrman about their success. Keep in mind that results vary from person to person. As always, consult your physician if you have a medical history and/or condition that may warrant individual recommendations.
Tina thought having a diabetes diagnosis meant forever until she read The End of Diabetes; now she no longer has diabetes and lost 68 pounds
I started the Nutritarian diet because in early October of 2017, I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. My A1C was 11 which in my doctor's words was "out of control." It didn't really surprise me that I had diabetes, but the high A1C number shocked me. After I saw the results online, I went to the Amazon website to search for "diabetic" cookbooks because I knew I would have to drastically change my eating style. My eating lifestyle prior to starting this program was mostly fast food, chips, cookies, and candy. I ate very little fruits / veggies. As I was searching the Amazon website, I saw a book The End of Diabetes. It immediately got my attention. I did not realize that you could reverse diabetes. I always thought once you were diagnosed, you went on the medication and ate a little differently and that was that. Well, I read what I could online and was completely amazed at what I was reading. I had it sent to my Kindle so I could keep reading it. I did not want to stop reading it. When I finished reading the book, I knew that I needed to start this program.
I started following the very aggressive approach. The first 2-3 weeks were a little hard and difficult because I had to get used to eating food that I had not eaten much in my life. There were times when I would ask myself if it was really worth it or should I just go on the medication and deal with it that way. But I was determined that I was not going to go on medication for the rest of my life and now that I knew I could turn my diagnosis around I was going to do whatever I needed to do. So, I kept at it. After I had been doing the program for two weeks, I had my follow up with my doctor. I told him what I was doing food wise and that I had lost 11 pounds and I did not want to go on medication. I asked him to give me 12 weeks and then we could discuss things again. He said he would give me 6 weeks and that he wanted my A1C below 7 and then we would talk again about medication. I said o.k.
So, 6 weeks later I went back for the A1C check. By this time, I had been doing the program for 8 weeks. My A1C came in at 6.9 which was just below the 7 he wanted. He was happy as was I and he told me that he would not make me go on medication. By this time, I had lost about 35 pounds. He told me I would do another A1C test in 6 months which I just did on May 31st, 2018, and my A1C was 5.1! I couldn't believe it and my doctor was shocked and amazed at my numbers. My cholesterol numbers also completely turned around and my blood pressure has been absolutely great as well. All of this was accomplished with no medication and was done with simply eating the right kind of food.
I love all the healthy stuff I eat and I don't miss the fast food, chips, cookies, and other stuff that I used to eat all the time. I love the raw cashew butter I buy from Dr. Fuhrman’s website. I also take the women's daily multivitamin that I buy from his website.
I feel great and have more energy and I don't come home exhausted every day from teaching like I used to. I haven't felt this great in such a long time. I used to wear plus sizes 20-22 and now I'm wearing misses’ sizes 8-10.
I guess my advice to other people battling health issues would be read the books from Dr. Fuhrman and when you understand that the food you are eating is basically killing you and that you can change your health, feel good, get off medication, and lose weight ask yourself what's more important? The food I like (though it may not be healthy) or my life?
