Five Minute Chocolate Nice Cream

It's easy to end your meal on a sweet note with this quick chocolate "ice cream". Keep some frozen bananas on hand so you are ready to whip it up whenever the mood strikes.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons unsweetened soy, hemp or almond milk
2 regular dates or 1 medjool date, pitted
1-2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon pure vanilla bean powder or alcohol free vanilla extract
2 large ripe bananas, frozen (see note)

Instructions:

Add non-dairy milk, dates, cocoa powder and vanilla to a high-powered blender and start to blend. Drop frozen banana pieces in slowly. Add additional non-dairy milk if needed to reach desired consistency.

Note: Freeze ripe bananas at least 8 hours in advance. Peel bananas and seal in a plastic bag before freezing.

Really yummy! I use almond milk instead of soymilk. This really hits the spot when my husband gets cravings for chocolate ice cream.

I liked this version a lot, but not as much as the Chocolate Almond Walnut Ice Cream because I did taste the banana as much as the chocolate. I like bananas a lot but I think the chocolate taste should dominate here. I will make this again especially because it's so quick and tastes good. But the other "chocolate" ice cream (more involved) is my ultimate favorite. Next time I make this one, I'll try either less banana or less ripe bananas. I'd give this 4.5 stars;)

Amazing! I used raw cacao nibs instead of powder and unsweetened chocolate almond milk in place of the soy. My non-nutritarian husband declared this a keeper!

I like bananas cut up in fruit salad or banana bread not ice cream. It over powers the cocoa flavor, so replacing all of the banana with frozen cherries works really well. I've also heard cherries combined with pineapple good too.

The first time I made this I attempted to do it in a vita mix with a large container. Epic fail. Try using a smaller container to blend. Once I got it right it was delicious.

Excellent and quick frozen dessert. I give it 4 stars instead of 5 because the taste of banana comes through— even though I used 2 TBLS of cocoa powder. The other chocolate ice cream recipe that uses walnuts tastes more like real chocolate ice cream.

I've made this a number of times and don't even have to consult the recipe anymore. It's so easy. I use a food processor. 

I've mixed things up a bit here and there depending on what I have on hand. A handful of walnuts added and prcessed quickly toward the end is always tasty. Don't process too much or they disappear.

I've added a little cinnamon to perk it up. I've even added a little espresso powder, well blended in, of course. It really brings out the flavor of chocolate. I'd like to try some orange zest sometime, maybe some frozen cherries...just to find different flavors that work.

I have served this or a version of it to guests and was told this was the best "ice cream" they ever had!  Easy and fun!  I would give this five stars, but I can't see how to do that.

Using Vitamix 5200 and 48 cup container I found pieces of dates got trapped under the blades even though I tried to blend the dates, milk and vanilla before adding bananas and the finished product had many pieces of unblended dates.  How can I achieve the results the other posters rave about?

Do you use the Vitamix tamper tool? We always use the tamper for nice cream moving it from corner to corner of the jar to get all the pieces. And often I too just increase by 1 serving to make more volume and smoother blending, (I.e. one more banana; one more date and one more tbsp cocoa since that is the basic ratio). Hope it helps.

I find it easier to double the recipe so it works better in my blendtec.  I use fresh or defrosted bananas, blend the recipe and divide it into single portion small freezer containers with lids from Dollar Store and freeze for a few hours.  I then serve with fresh or defrosted strawberries.  Yummy.

What vitamix blender are you all using for the great results posted here?  I have a 48 cup container. I soaked the dates then cut them up. The milk, dates, cocoa & vanilla remain underneath the blades before adding the banana pieces slowly as suggested. While it tasted good I had pieces of unblended dates to chew on.  What am I doing wrong?

I also used Vitamix Blender with a 48 cup container.  The flavor is delicious.  However, the blender failed to blend such a small amount.

I will do 4 times the recipe serving 8 and will freeze the rest.  I will try a smaller amount of cocoa and hemp milk, add more later, if desired.  I soaked the chopped up date in the liquid for 15 minutes or so, to blend easier.  I would use at most 2 bananas so as not to overwhelm the flavor.

I have the same question. As is I'd have to give it a 1.  I suspect if one quadrupled the recipe it might work better. I'm not going to rate it this time in case I decide to make it in a much larger quantity to see if it can blend. But as is, it did not work for me. I have a Vitamix 5000 and used the tall container specifically to make the ingredients reach "higher" in the container. Oh well.

I am not big on chocolate ice cream, but with only 1 tablespoon of cocoa, it is really quite good! It definitely satisfies my desire for something on the sweet side.

Delicious! Agree with others, no dates needed, and double the recipe for easier blending, adding milk as needed.
